On Faking It Till You Become It

It has a fraudulent ring to it. But one powerful idea highlighted as indispensable to living a remarkable life is that it is important to "fake it till you become it."

But, what does this mean?

Amy Cuddy, a social psychologist of Harvard Business School, has a rather interesting interpretation of the idea. Faking it till you become it is about living in alignment with cherished values. It is fuelled by the premise that sometimes we might find ourselves far off values we cherish and must have to fight our way towards living in alignment with those values. And that, in most instances, the biggest fight we would have to face is the fight with ourselves.

Say, for example, you are diffident. Social spaces in particular make you uncomfortable. But you like the idea of being confident and navigating social spaces, because it is how you see yourself, it is who you are (who you know is a representation of your highest self), and because being confident is a requirement to getting your ideas heard, building important relationships, and in general living an overall healthy life. Fake it till you become it insists that you fake being confident until you become confident.

Is it a good idea?

It is certainly not a bad one. A major concern opposing the idea is that to be a student of the idea is to invest in being a faker, a poser, an inauthentic person who forgets the value of being true to oneself. But the thesis forwarding this position often misses the point: that each of us are bad are knowing who we are, and the values we cherish.

One certain thing is that each of us play host to, in addition to large volume of agreements and ideas from our inner world, a large amount of information from our outer world. You may have been ten years old sketching on paper what you felt was a masterpiece when your father came up to you, picked up the drawing, and said dispassionately: "You can't do anything." The value constructed by your inner world destroyed by an encounter played out in your outer world. Of course, now a thirty year old man, even though you fantasize about being a painter, you defer from painting because, as you often find yourself saying, you can't do anything - especially not painting.

Faking it till you become it is about rewriting beliefs which shape the behaviours of our lives until our belief-scripts offer a true representation of our deepest selves. Fake it till your become it is precisely about being true to oneself. It posits that, on an intuitive level, you know yourself and have to block out the noise that hopes to steal you away from this knowledge.

Enjoy!
