An Invaluable Advice
Learn to Meditate. This might be the best advice you will ever receive.
For the purpose of this post, I define meditation to be: the process of maintaining a clear mind while observing the thoughts it produces. This is to shed the tonnes of connotational baggage that comes with it's meaning.
Meditation has numerous benefits (such as alleviating stress, anxiety and depression). You can enjoy glimpse of its benefits from a few short sessions with the practice. However, it is a practice that requires commitment and consistency.
To learn about meditation as a beginner, I recommend headspace.com. It guides you through the process. It offers special sessions to boost valuable skills such as focus, creativity and maintaining relationships.
A Useful Mantra
A criteria for carrying out meditation (better termed mindfulness) is to observe. To avoid analyzing, avoid criticizing. To Just observe.
One technique I have found useful is the silent repetition of a mantra. The mantra I have found most rewarding is thank you.
What this has done in my experience is to uncover the gem of seeing things as they are (which had been difficult. So much that I could not relate to such a notion). Also, I sometimes feel a deep sense of connection to things.
On A Final Note
This post isn't elaborate. The experiences that comes from meditation are far too nuanced to condense into a 300 words blog post. For a more detailed information on meditation, check out Sam Harris's Waking Up.
