The 86th Oscars held earlier this year was amazing! Star-studded as always, it was graced by best-in-world
entertainment icons, many of which made fashion statements that left many of us
in awe. Among the outstanding, there are those who still stand out
preeminently. One of such people in this year’s Oscars was Pharrel Williams! He
left us dumbfounded and amazed when he strolled out
wearing his suits with a pair of shorts and a killer brogues to go with the
uncommon perfection. So many comments were made about his look that day but in
all he was justified for it.
Now,
many of us are going for shorts. Not necessarily pairing them with a suit. But it’s
obvious there are a lot out there who could use a tip or two when it comes to
working a pair of shorts. Sit back, relax and let’s get you on your way to looking
stunning in your shorts through a few do’s and don'ts.
DO:
Get the length right
This is the mostly the real style killer when it comes to shorts. Ideally it should finish an inch or two above the knees, any longer than that we are starting to approach the three–quarter length
It really takes a good pair of legs to pull off a good pair of shorts, I would advise you to stick to the length that suits your body type. Fraquoh and Franchomme of AttireClub.org have some great tips regarding this. Go ahead and read it here. You could follow these very quick guide lines
- Taller men should aim to have their shorts finish just above the knee, which will slightly lower down and balance their long proportion, a couple of folds at the hem will also add natural bulk to thin legs.
- On the other hand short men should aim for a couple of inches above the knee, this will give them the appearance of longer legs. Folded hem should be avoided rather they should opt for slim cuts and clean finish.
- If you are a muscular gent or have particularly great legs anything goes but a clean finish and slim cut would be the best rather than rolled up or folded hems.
DO:
Test out your shorts
This is a mistake many of us continue
to make when purchasing any type of legwear either trousers or shorts.
Opt for a slim and not a restrictive fit
in other to ensure comfort.
DO:
Aim for versatility over making a statement
A pair of floral shorts maybe fun to break out every once in a while. But by all means invest in a couple of statement pairs but keep the rest in classic block colours such as black, navy, grey, olive, or white. Not only do these offer unrivaled versatility but they also provide you with solid foundation to some pieces like floral print, or Breton stripe and colour pop shoes.

Don’t:
Underestimate the importance of fabric
Due to this country’s (Nigeria)
tropic climate you will want to make sure your shorts keep you as cool as
possible. Opt for materials like cotton,
linen-blends, madras or seersucker to not only help keep sweat at bay but also
to proof that you’re a stylish man who understands the importance of seasonal
dressing.
DON’T:
Spend a lot
Buy the best quality you can within
your price range, cause as long as you nail the fit of your shorts no one is
going to be able to tell the difference between a high fashion pair and one which
are inexpensive. Also consider making your own, I personally take a look
through some of my old trousers that I don’t wear and decide if turning them
into shorts will breathe life into them. It’s actually a simple job for you or
your tailor to do, why not give it a try.
Don’t:
Forget about the suit shorts.
This look is definitely not for everyone but there’s no denying
This look is definitely not for everyone but there’s no denying
that when it’s done perfectly it can be an absolute
knock out.
· Make sure that the
shorts come in same fit as the blazers. If
your jacket doesn't come in a same cut as your trouser/short, it instantly
shows throws out your silhouette.
· You don’t need to match
the colour of your jacket and your short. Embrace contrast.
· Don’t start adding
patterns or overly loud colours and embellishment into the mix; let the short
suit do the talking.
· Have some fun with it
and wear it with rock solid confidence.
